The Dreadnaughts (8-8-2, 3-2-1 Southeastern Conference) opened the scoring as junior Mike Herter turned the light on off an assist from sophomore John Brosch at 12:28 of the first period.
Lakeland (10-6) answered in the second period as Matt Busterna scored tying the game at 1-1. Jayson Cronk picked up an assist on the goal.
In the third period, sophomore Matt Stirling scored at 7:58 of the frame, giving Dexter a 2-1 advantage. Junior Chris Carrender recorded an assist on the play for the Dreadnaughts.
It appeared Dexter would earn its ninth victory of the season as Lakeland pulled its goalie with less than a minute left on the clock. With six players swarming the Dreadnaught goal, Cronk swiped at a bouncing puck in front of the Dexter net, hitting it in for the tying goal with 14 seconds remaining. Trevor Lloyd picked an assist on the play.
With the goal, the game went into overtime. Despite peppering 10 shots on Lakeland's goal in eight minutes, the Dreadnaughts were not able to score, ending the game at 2-2.
"It was a good game all around," said Dexter coach Gary Howell. "The play was pretty even the whole game."
Lakeland out-shot Dexter 42-34 for the contest.
Senior Nick Ceccolini preserved the tie in net for the Dreadnaughts.
On Jan. 30, host Dexter defeated Temperance Bedford 4-2.
"We played well," Howell said. "We were good in our defensive zone. We were able to put a couple (shots) in the net. It was a good win for us."
Stirling began the scoring getting a shot past a sprawled Mules goaltender for a 1-0 lead at 6:00 of the first period. Carrender had an assist on the goal for the Dreadnaughts.
At 13:12 of the second period, Stirling scored his second goal of the night on a power play. Senior Hunter Lyons and Carrender picked up an assist on the goal for Dexter.
At 8:59 of the second period, Bedford responded as Jesse Bachli scored off an assist from Garryt Kujawa and Andy Backus.
Thirteen seconds later, Bachli scored again tying the contest at 2-2. Christian Williams and Kujawa assisted on the goal for the Mules.
At 5:16, junior Mike Clutterbuck gave the Dreadnaughts the lead at 3-2 scoring off an assist from senior Andrew Hatch and Stirling.
In the third period, Dexter sealed the win as senior Donny Kennedy scored converting a pass from senior Austin Shapiro and Brosch for the game's final margin.
Ceccolini recorded the win between the pipes for the Dreadnaughts.
Both teams finished with 31 shots on goal for the game.
Dexter next hosts Woodhaven Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
On Wednesday, the Dreadnaughts host county rival Chelsea at 7:30 p.m.
