Dreads claim Ida crown

For the second straight season, Dexter volleyball captured the championship of the Ida Invitational.

Last Saturday, the Dreadnaughts (20-11-4) defeated the host Bluestreaks in a three-game final 25-17, 23-25, 15-13 to win the title.
Dexter beat Erie-Mason in the semifinals 25-11, 25-21.
In pool play, the Dreadnaughts finished first defeating Whiteford 27-25, 25-17, New Boston Huron 25-11, 27-26 and Dundee 25-19, 25-15. Dexter split with Brooklyn Columbia Central 25-17, 21-25.
Individually for the Dreadnaughts, senior Camille Hanks led the way with 31 kills and 29 blocks.
Senior Heather Bradshaw added a team-high 77 digs, while Colleen Lasecki had 27 kills for Dexter.
Senior setter Rosie Lee finished with 78 assists and 19 aces for the Dreads.
Also performing well during the tournament for Dexter were senior right side hitter Margo Parin, senior middle blocker Elizabeth Umstead, junior outside hitter Sheree Christian, junior defensive specialist Jessie Sowers and junior outside hitter Mariah Hill.
"They all played very well," said Dexter coach Sarah Hynes. "They did a nice job."
Last Thursday, the host Dreadnaughts defeated Southeastern Conference White Division foe Tecumseh 25-14, 25-19, 25-18.
Leading Dexter individually was Hanks with 10 kills.
Courtney Krips added nine kills, while Bradshaw had 15 digs and Lasecki 12 digs and three aces.
Junior Sonya Lewis recorded 15 assists, while Lee had 18 assists for the Dreadnaughts.
Hynes said Dexter is playing well at the moment.
"We're 3-1 in league play right now," she said. "Ball control has been one of our strengths. If we can serve and pass, we've been successful."
Hynes praised numerous Dreads for their play.
"Katie Ryan, Colleen Lasecki, Courtney Krips and Heather Bradshaw have been solid passing for us this year," she said.
Hynes said her entire team has improved as the season has progressed.
"Overall they've done a nice job," she said. "We've improved our blocking."
Dexter next hosts SEC Red Division opponent Adrian Thursday at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, the Dreadnaughts travel to Ann Arbor Pioneer to participate in its invitational at 8:30 a.m.
On Feb. 8, Dexter visits county and SEC rival Chelsea for a match at 7 p.m.
