PUBLISHED: February 1, 2007

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team hosted the 15th annual Freshman/Sophomore Invitational last Saturday.

Twelve schools and 180 swimmers and divers participated in the event, designed to give underclassmen a chance to compete against their peers.

The meet draws a mixture of Division I and Division II schools from the southeast Michigan area.

Along with host Dexter, participating schools included Brighton, Chelsea, Hartland, Livonia Stevenson, Milan, Pinckney, Plymouth Canton, Plymouth Salem, Saline, University of Detroit Jesuit, and Ypsilanti Willow Run. Medals are awarded through 12th place, but team scores are not tabulated.

Sophomore Robert Spiegel captured two third-place medals for Dexter, while sophomore Taylor Verna picked up fourth- and fifth-place finishes and earned a state cut in the process.

Other Dreadnaught individual medalists included sophomores Derek Wooton, Jacob Wiltse, Karl Kumbier, and Scott Crompton, and freshman Jesse Claflin. Freshman Shawn Greco was a relay medalist.

Dreadnaught coach Michael McHugh praised the accomplishments of the Dexter underclassmen.

"We swam really well today," he said. "A lot of the guys swam season best or lifetime best times."

In the 200 medley relay, Claflin, Greco, Spiegel, and Verna combined for fourth place with a time of 1:56.06.

The Dreads captured three medals in the 200 freestyle. Wooton placed sixth in 1:57.79, while Wiltse came in seventh in 1:59.39 and Kumbier 12th in 2:02.75. Tyler Steeb finished 24th for Dexter.

Spiegel led the Dreadnaughts in the 50 freestyle, sprinting to third place with a time of 24.23. Liam Donevan finished 21st, Greco was 26th, Andrew Leonard 49th and Crompton 53rd.

In one-meter diving, Crompton took home a fourth-place medal with a score of 163.90 points. Corey Presley placed 12th with 108.60 points.

In the 100 butterfly, it was Spiegel capturing third again, with a time of 1:00.78. Claflin placed 11th in 1:08.13. Donevan finished 14th for the Dreads.

In the 100 freestyle, Verna clocked a 53.16 to place fifth. Steeb came in 28th.

The distance duo of Wooton and Kumbier placed sixth and ninth, respectively, in the 500 freestyle. After 20 lengths, four swimmers touched within 1.6 seconds of one another, with Wooton at 5:27.97 and Kumbier at 5:29.55.

The foursome of Spiegel, Wooton, Kumbier and Wiltse went 1:40.42 to grab fourth in the 200 freestyle relay.

Claflin was the lone Dreadnaught in the 100 backstroke, finishing 14th.

Verna paced the Dreads in the 100 breaststroke, placing fourth and earning his state cut with a time of 1:06.27, beating the qualifying standard by two-hundredths of a second. Wiltse placed 10th in 1:11.72. Greco finished 14th, while Leonard was 27th.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Verna, Wiltse, Wooton, and Kumbier joined forces to place third, recording a time of 3:40.07.

"Without having a meet in two weeks, it was good to see our guys finally get up and race again," McHugh said. "I am really looking forward to the coming week, where my upperclassmen will have the opportunity to race again against some really tough competition."

Dexter next travels to Saline Friday for a meet at 6:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Dreadnaughts visit Ypsilanti Lincoln for a match up at 6:30 p.m.

On Feb. 9, Dexter travels to county and Southeastern Conference rival Chelsea for a meet at 6:30 p.m.

On Feb. 10, the Dreads will participate in the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association Invitational at Eastern Michigan University.
