College standouts continue to grow

The list of Chelsea and Dexter athletes standing out above the crowd at the collegiate level continues to grow.

Former Bulldog Emily Hardcastle is a key member of the University of Toledo women's golf team this season. A freshman, Hardcastle is already part of the Rockets' playing rotation as the No. 6 golfer. During the fall season, she competed in three of the team's five events, including the Big Ten preview tournament at Penn State University.
Hardcastle, a former All-State performer athletically and academically while at Chelsea, is majoring in political science.
At Oakland University, Dexter sophomore Frank McAuliffe shot a final round 75 to help lead the Golden Grizzlies to a tie for 20th place at the MacDonald Cup at the Yale University Golf Course in New Haven, Conn. Oakland ended up with a two-day score of 622 (310-312).
Chelsea's Michael Sauers starts as a central midfielder for Grace College in Winona Lake, Ind. A freshman, Sauers earned the team's Most Improved Player Award this past season.
Last Saturday, Dexter and Chelsea swimmers came together as Kenyon College in Ohio faced host Oakland University. The Golden Grizzlies won the men's meet 179-101, while Oakland also captured the women's contest 154-138.
Chelsea junior Andy Kellogg paced the Golden Grizzlies placing first in the 100 breaststroke in 58.29 and first in the 100 freestyle in 46.19. He also was a member of Oakland's third-place finishing 200 medley relay in 1:37.09.
For Kenyon, Dexter freshman Kirk Kumbier placed third in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:20.45. He also was eighth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.04 and was a member of the eighth-place 200 medley relay team.
Dexter freshman Ashley Espinoza placed sixth in the 200 breaststroke in 2:43.99 for Oakland. She also was eighth in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.82 and was a member of the Golden Grizzlies seventh-place finishing 200 medley relay.
For Kenyon, Chelsea junior Kara Stiles finished third in the 200 individual medley in 2:13.51. She also was fifth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:11.23 and was a member of the sixth-place finishing 200 medley relay.
Last Friday, Chelsea and Dexter athletes faced each other again, except this time it was on the indoor track and not in the pool.
At the Notre Dame Invitational, Dexter freshman Dan Jackson finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:27.55. Behind Jackson, the Fighting Irish placed first overall with a score of 141 points. Michigan State was second with 89 points.
Pacing the Spartans were Chelsea runners junior Dan Lewis and freshman Ian Girard. Lewis finished eighth in the mile run in 4:11.31, while Girard was 16th in 4:39.50.
