Even King Neptune's creatures would have flapped their fins in appreciation of Dexter's Mill Creek Middle School swimming and diving team's performance last weekend at the Erie-Mason Invitational.

The Mariners took first place overall with a narrow victory over rival Saline and a host of other teams from the region.
The outcome of the meet was not decided until the final race of day, the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Nate Kilian, Lindsey Gagneau, Josh Boren, and Stephen Sobczak were edged out by Saline in a scintillating photo finish. Their performance and the key third-place showing of the team of Jake Claflin, Noelle Stabler, Katie Taylor and Laura Steavenson was enough to give Dexter the win.
Stephen Sobczak was named the Most Valuable Swimmer of the meet with record performances in the 50 freestyle (24.34) and the 100 backstroke (57.26).
Other Dexter winners in this exceptionally strong field included a win by Casey Edwards in the 50 butterfly (27.21) and an equally impressive first-place showing by Laura Stephenson in the 100 freestyle (56.87).
Austin Daugherty also had an excellent meet taking third place in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.62) and the 100 individual medley (1:06.79).
Mill Creek coach Cari Carr was pleased with the Mariners' effort from the first to the last race of the day. Many Dexter swimmers swam personal best times at the meet.
Mill Creek divers turned in a fine performance at Erie-Mason, as well. The Mariners were led by Brandon Schlei and Courtney Young. Schlei took second overall scoring 160.9 points. Young turned in several fine dives on her route to a strong sixth-place finish overall.
