Dexter cagers keep improving

Dexter's girls' basketball team is arguably the best 3-9 squad in the area. Though not seeing a lot of wins this season, the Dreadnaughts have been competitive in every game and a made shot here or a defensive stop there, and Dexter's record could be flip-flopped.

On Jan. 17, the Dreadnaughts lost to host Ann Arbor Huron 37-32.
"We were down by one with a minute to go," said Dexter coach Mike Bavineau. "We came up short. We missed a couple shots at the end."
Despite the setback, Bavineau remained upbeat.
"We're making progress," he said. "We said we wanted to take care of the ball, play better defense and give a good effort. We've done those things."
The Dreads led 5-3 after one quarter.
At halftime, the River Rats rallied to take a 15-13 lead.
In the third quarter, Huron outscored Dexter 12-0 increasing its advantage to 27-13 entering the fourth frame.
Instead of crumbling and falling behind even more, the Dreadnaughts tightened their sneakers and played harder. Dexter's extra effort paid dividends as the Dreads outscored the River Rats 19-10 in the fourth quarter for the night's final margin.
Senior guard Breanne Svihra led Dexter with 16 points.
Senior swing player Kelsey Johnson added 10 points, while junior Brittany Walls had two points and senior Celia Kuzon and junior Hadley Stoll each netted one point for the Dreadnaughts. Kuzon also was a monster on the glass for Dexter.
"Celia did an outstanding job on the backboards for us," Bavineau said.
On Jan. 15, the visiting Dreadnaughts lost to county rival Chelsea 43-36.
"We actually tied the game with two to three minutes to go," Bavineau said. "We tried to create quality scoring chances, but we weren't able to come up with the plays when we needed to.
"We continued to rally. We never gave up. I'm proud of our effort."
The Bulldogs ran out to a 14-7 first quarter lead.
At the break, Chelsea continued leading 28-21.
In the second half, both clubs scored 15 points for the game's ending tally.
Johnson sparked Dexter with 15 points.
Junior Amy Baldus chipped in six points, while Walls had five points and Sherri Gamble four points for the Dreadnaughts.

JV Basketball
Dexter's JV girls' basketball team defeated host Ann Arbor Huron 39-29 Jan. 17.
"We went behind early and battled back in the second and third quarter," said Dexter coach Rob Leadley. "Keeping Huron off the boards was the key to the game."
The River Rats raced out to an 11-3 first quarter lead.
In the second quarter, however, the Dreadnaughts (10-2) regrouped outscoring Huron 17-3 taking a 20-14 advantage into halftime.
In the third quarter, Dexter outscored Ann Arbor 9-6 for a 29-20 lead heading into the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Dreads netted 10 points, while the River Rats recorded nine points for the game's final margin.

On Jan. 15, the host Dreadnaughts beat county rival Chelsea 40-22.
"We played with a great sense of urgency and really came out fired up on defense," Leadley said.
Dexter jumped out to an 11-5 first quarter lead. At halftime, the Dreadnaughts had ballooned their advantage to 22-6.
Entering the fourth quarter, Dexter led 29-12. In the fourth stanza, the Dreads outscored the Bulldogs 11-10 for the game's ending tally.
