Rivals battle on court

By Don Richter, Sports Editor

PUBLISHED: January 24, 2008

In front of a raucous home court crowd, Dexter's boys' basketball team lost to county rival Chelsea 67-56 Jan. 15.

The Dreadnaughts (7-3, 4-2 Southeastern Conference) entered the game winners of six of their last seven contests. The Bulldogs (8-3, 6-1 SEC), on the other hand, were just as hot, tasting victory in five of their last six outings.

"I thought Chelsea totally dominated us from beginning to end," said Dexter coach Randy Swoverland.

To begin the game, Chelsea ran out to a 13-8 first quarter lead.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs took command of the contest, outscoring Dexter 19-8, taking a 32-16 advantage into the break.

In the third quarter, the Dreadnaughts fought back, outscoring Chelsea 23-18, entering the fourth stanza trailing 50-39.

Early in the fourth quarter, Dexter trimmed the Bulldogs' lead to six points forcing a Chelsea timeout. With the home crowd howling, the Dreadnaughts appeared to have all the momentum. Out of the timeout, however, the Bulldogs were able to silence the crowd scoring three straight baskets.

"That was big," said Chelsea coach Robin Raymond. "We weathered their second half run."

In the fourth quarter, both squads scored 17 points for the night's final margin.

With home court advantage and a basketball team, which entered the game playing well, facing a county rival, Swoverland expected a stronger performance from his squad.

"Surprisingly, we were not as competitive as I thought we would be," he said. "We didn't battle like we need to battle against an arch rival in a big game. Chelsea's offensive execution was much better than our defense."

Senior guard T.J. Fenske (6-foot-1) led Dexter with 13 points, including one triple.

Senior post player Dave Pisano (6-5, 225 pounds) added 12 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Stefan Elslager (5-11) had 10 points, including two three-pointers.

Junior guard Ryan Lemasters finished with nine points, including one triple, and a team-high eight assists, while junior forward Dan Newell (6-4) had eight points for the Dreadnaughts.

The Bulldogs ended up with five players in double figures, led by senior forward Greg Rebuldela (6-4), who had 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals.

For the game, Dexter shot 21-of-50 from the field for 42 percent. Chelsea was 28-of-54 for 52 percent.

At the free throw line, the Dreads finished 10-of-15 for 67 percent. The Bulldogs were 10-of-14 for 71 percent.

Chelsea out-rebounded Dexter 39-26, including 16-6 on the offensive glass.

Both clubs were fairly equal in the turnover department as the Dreadnaughts committed 15 miscues and the Bulldogs 13 for the game.

Dexter recorded nine steals for the night, while Chelsea had 11.

The Dreadnaughts blocked three shots, while the Bulldogs swatted away six.

Dexter next travels to SEC White Division foe Ypsilanti Lincoln for a contest Friday at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Dreadnaughts visit SEC Red Division opponent Saline for a match-up at 7 p.m.

On Jan. 31, Dexter travels to SEC Red Division rival Adrian for a game at 7 p.m.
