U-M takes on All-Stars

By Don Richter, Sports Editor

PUBLISHED: January 18, 2007

The sixth annual University of Michigan athletes versus the Dexter All-Stars fund-raiser basketball game will be 7:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Dexter High School gymnasium.

"It's always a fun night," said Tom Barbieri, Dexter head football coach and organizer of the event.

It's also a night that helps fund sports programs at all levels.

"All the money goes to Dexter athletics," Barbieri said. "Last year, the money raised was used for middle school sports. It helped fund A and B programs, having two teams for football, basketball and volleyball."

The cost to attend the event is $4 in advance or $5 at the door. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Dexter Athletic Department office or from Dexter football players in eighth- through 12th-grades.

The game will be sponsored by the Teaching, Educating and Mentoring group (TEAM).

At halftime, Dexter youth league basketball players, both boys and girls, in fourth- through sixth-grades, will compete in a game.

As in prior years, the U-M athletes, both current and former standouts, will be available for autographs and photo opportunities also at halftime.

Former Wolverines scheduled to participate in the event include football players Mark Messner, Doug Skene, Clint Copenhaver, Stan Edwards, Andy Mignery, Dan Jokisch and Tad VanPelt.

Also expected to hit the court for Michigan are former basketball players Dugan Fife, Anne LeMare, Katie Dykhouse and Jennifer Smith, along with baseball players Jeff Tandreys and Tom Timmerman and WTKA radio personality Josh Vernier.

Former Dexter All-State quarterback Jeff Ziegler, now a freshman on the U-M football team, will also be in attendance. Barbieri said Ziegler would more than likely bring numerous current Wolverines with him to the event for fans to meet.

In the past, players such as Braylon Edwards, Jason Avant and Marlin Jackson have participated in the fund-raiser for U-M.

Filling out the All-Stars roster will be a team of Dexter teachers, coaches and administrators.

Suiting up for Dexter will be Mike Bavineau, Angie Scott, Dewey Scott, Patrick Glenn, Jaime Dudash, Ed Bostic, Frank McMurray, Fred Ligrow, Matt Brown, Laura Haas, Brian Baird and Joe Romeo.

Like the Harlem Globetrotters and the Washington Generals, the U-M athletes have won every game against the Dexter All-Stars over the years. Despite sending six and sometimes seven players out onto the floor at one time, the All-Stars have not been able to defeat the high-jumping and fast-running Michigan athletes.

Maybe this year the All-Stars will finally get that elusive first "W."
