Dexter falls to Pioneer, St. Francis

PUBLISHED: January 18, 2007

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team fell to Ann Arbor Pioneer and Toledo St. Francis de Sales last Thursday, then came back to defeat Adrian 24 hours later. The Dreadnaughts' record in head-to-head competition is even at 2-2 this season.

Pioneer overpowered Dexter with its team depth, 136-50. The St. Francis contest was much closer, with the Knights edging the Dreads, 96-90.

Despite the defeats, the Dreadnaughts delivered some strong individual performances and continued to drop time as a team. Senior Kirk Kumbier captured first overall in the 100 breaststroke, while junior Ben Steavenson grabbed second in the 500 freestyle. Steavenson also earned a state qualifying time in the 200 individual medley. Scott Crompton finished second overall in diving.

"Going up against two of the top programs from Ohio and Michigan, in St. Francis and Pioneer, our guys showed a lot of heart by stepping up and swimming without fear," said Dexter coach Michael McHugh. "They just went out and swam their races and competed to the best of their ability."

The 200 medley relay quartet of Steavenson, Kumbier, Robert Spiegel, and Joey Sayre swam 1:48.20 to finish first against Toledo and second against Pioneer. Nate Cook, Johno Wilson, Danny Rion, and Matt Cambridge came in third versus St. Francis.

In the 200 freestyle, Scott Dyer and Derek Wooton placed third and fourth, respectively, against the Knights, good for fourth and fifth against the Pioneers.

Kumbier and Stevenson went one-two against Toledo in the 200 individual medley (third and fifth versus Pioneer), while Sean Kilian picked up fifth against St. Francis. Kumbier lowered his state cut time to 2:07.04, while Steavenson notched his first cut of the season by clocking 2:09.85.

In the 50 sprint freestyle, Walker McHugh and Spiegel touched third and fifth, respectively, against St. Francis, and fourth and fifth versus Pioneer.

With a score of 170.55 points, Crompton won the one meter diving against Pioneer and finished second versus Toledo. Corey Presley was fifth against both schools.

Rion, Spiegel, and Sayre went two-three-four in the 100 butterfly versus St. Francis. Rion and Spiegel were fourth and fifth against Pioneer.

In the 100 freestyle, Taylor Verna captured second versus the Knights and third against the Pioneers. Verna clocked a 52.62, just 0.83 second short of the state qualifying time. Jacob Wiltse was fifth against each opponent.

Against St. Francis in the 500 freestyle, Steavenson and Dyer finished first and second, respectively, and Wooton added points in fifth. Steavenson and Dyer were third and fifth versus Pioneer. Steavenson's time of 5:12.39 was within striking distance of the 5:10.29 state cut.

The 200 freestyle relay of Kumbier, Verna, Sayre, and McHugh placed second against both St. Francis and Pioneer. The foursome of Rion, Karl Kumbier, Wiltse, and Dyer captured third against Toledo.

In the 100 backstroke, Cook, Butler, and Rion finished third, fourth, and fifth versus St. Francis, and Cook and Butler placed fourth and fifth against Pioneer.

Kirk Kumbier won the 100 breaststroke, lowering his state qualifying time to 1:03.77. Verna finished third versus Pioneer, and Kumbier, Verna and Wilson swept the top three spots against the Knights.

Verna, Spiegel, McHugh, and Steavenson combined to place second in the 400 freestyle relay against St. Francis, and third against Pioneer.

Adrian vs. Dexter

Against Adrian the next night, it was Dexter that had the team depth advantage. The Dreadnaughts won 10 of 12 events in defeating the Maples, 126-60.

Steavenson and Kirk Kumbier each won two individual events for Dexter, while Crompton, Verna, and Spiegel won one apiece. The Dreads were victorious in all three relays.

Rion, Verna, Kirk Kumbier, and McHugh won the 200 medley relay, while the foursome of Cambridge, Shawn Greco, Sayre, and Dyer captured second place.

In the 200 freestyle, Steavenson touched first, followed by Wiltse in second and Butler in fifth.

Wilson was the top Dreadnaught in the 200 individual medley, finishing second. Ryan Aliapoulios came in third, and Jesse Claflin placed fifth.

Kirk Kumbier sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle, with McHugh and Cook finishing second and third to sweep the top three spots.

In winning the one meter diving competition, Crompton tallied a personal best 199.25 points. Presley took third with 115.60 points, also a personal best performance.

In the 100 breaststroke, Cambridge placed second in 1:11.72, touched out by just 0.02 second. Tim Pituch finished fourth for the Dreadnaughts.

Dexter closed out the meet capturing the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay. Finishing first was the quartet of Kirk Kumbier, Stevenson, Sayre, and Verna. Wiltse, Rion, Spiegel, and Cambridge came in second.

"We had some really good swims this past week," McHugh said. "We have a few guys who are real close to getting their state cuts and I think they can get them in the near future."

The Dreads next travel to Ypsilanti Lincoln for a meet Jan. 26.

On Jan. 27 Dexter hosts its own Freshman/Sophomore Invitational.
