Lester A. McCalla died Monday, Jan. 15, 1007 after an extended illness. He was 82.

Born July 20, 1924 in Ann Arbor to Ruth (Spaulding) and Frank McCalla. He is survived by his children: Gordon (Michelle) McCalla, Mary Ann (Joe) Dettling, Manchester, and Karen McCalla, Oxnard, Calif., grandsons: Kevin (Jennifer) Dettling, Pinckney, and Keith (Sarah) Dettling, Jackson, great grandchildren: Chase and Victoria Dettling, Jackson; brother: Glen (Doris) McCalla, Ann Arbor, and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. McCalla was a life-long farmer first in Pittsfield Township and then in Manchester. He was a member of the Michigan Pork Producers, the Washtenaw County Farm Bureau and the Manchester Fair Board. He was pre-deceased by his parents, brother: Russell McCalla and sisters: Virginia Wiedmayer and Gertrude McCalla. A Celebration of Lester's life will take place on Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007 at the Sharon United Methodist Church where he will lie in state at 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Carter Garrigues-Cortelyou officiating. Homer J. St. John of Chelsea, a loving husband and father, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2007 in his home after a long battle with cancer. He was 82.

He was born Sept. 14, 1924 in Niagara Falls, N.Y., the son of Homer S. & Marguerite (Smith) St. John.

Homer has lived in Chelsea since 1980, coming from Ann Arbor. He was a U.S. Marine during World War II, serving in the historic battle of Tarawa. He was a decorated veteran receiving many awards including the Silver Star and Purple Heart. He earned his Law Degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee in 1954.

He had a long notable career in government service, retiring after 25 years as a special agent in the FBI. He continued to serve with other government agencies for 15 years.

Mr. St. John received the Warren Medal for outstanding contributions to the intelligence community.

He was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Choir.

On Sept. 14, 1944, he married Eleanor Trawicki, and she preceded him in death on May 16, 1968. He married Barbara Snyder on May 2, 1970, and she survives. Other survivors include four daughters, Ann (Carl) Kratochvil of Penn Yan, N.Y., Patricia St. John of Ypsilanti, Ellen (William) Roth of Bloomington, Ill., Jennifer St. John of Chelsea; two sons, John (Jill) St. John of Ypsilanti, Paul (Carol) St. John of Whitmore Lake; four brothers, Richard, Neil, Donald, Howard; and two sisters, Ethel Thomas, Helen Stewart; 14 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, James, two brothers, Elmer & Carl, and a sister, Marguerite Gibbs.

A Funeral Mass was held Jan. 16 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Chelsea, with Rev. Dr. William J. Turner officiating. Burial followed at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Dexter.

Memorial contributions may be made to The St. Louis Servants of Charity, St. Mary Catholic Church, Heifer International, or a charity of your choice.

Mary Claire (Putsy) Eggleton of Dexter died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2007. She was 81.

She was born the youngest of 11 children to Charles and Rose Dorsch in Detroit. She was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter and seldom missed mass. She loved to travel and spend time with her family and friends; her door was always open. She was an avid baseball fan through thick and thin. She loved to bake and was very good at it. She will always be remembered for her famous "Apple Jack Pie."

Her husband Alfred, her parents and 10 brothers and sisters, preceded her in death. Those left behind to cherish her memory are numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many great great nieces and nephews. Mass was celebrated Monday, Jan. 15 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dexter, Fr. Brendan Walsh presiding. Burial followed at St. Joseph Cemetery. Donations may be offered to the St. Joseph Stairway To The Future Building Fund, Arbor Hospice or The American Cancer Society.

Gertrude M. (Schultz) Edwards, nee Barr, of Saline and formerly of Dexter, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital of Ann Arbor on Jan. 10, 2007. She was 91.

She was born Feb. 1, 1910 in Muskegan to the late Harley and Irene (Drent) Barr. Survived by one brother Ken (Gerry) Barr of Rogers City, sister-in-law Bertine Barr of Dexter, daughter-in-law Louise Schultz of Saline, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husbands Kermit Schultz and William Edwards, her sister Henrietta (Barr) Schultz, brother Roy Barr, two sons Edwin Earl and Donald Guy, a step-son Steven Edwards and grandson Dale Schultz. A committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Jan. 20 at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Dexter. Arrangements with Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel in Dexter.

Memorials can go to St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor.

Rudolph H. Ottoman of St. Johns, formerly of Grass Lake, passed away Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at the Hazel Findlay Country Manor. He was 91.

Mr. Ottoman was born May 9, 1915 in Hamburg, Mich., the son of Hugo and Emilie (Hanneschlager) Ottoman. He had lived in the area all his life and was a member of K of C and St. Mary Catholic Church. He was a set-up man at Federal Screw in Chelsea for 40-plus years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in Germany and France for five years. He enjoyed baseball games, hunting, fishing and trapping.

He was married to Bernice (Dambrun) Ottoman and she preceded him in death on June 1, 2001. Surviving are three brothers Joseph (Dorothy) Ottoman of Chelsea, Albert Ottoman of Ann Arbor and Walter (Madeline) Ottoman of Chelsea, one sister Mary (Thomas) Kittel of Ann Arbor, one sister-in-law Blanche Ottoman of Chelsea and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Bernice, two brothers Edward and Clarence Ottoman, and his sister-in-law Kathleen Ottoman. Funeral services were Jan. 11 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea. Burial followed at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Chelsea. Expressions of sympathy can be made to St Louis School or St. Mary Catholic Church.

Leslie Kuhn Reichard of Dexter died peacefully at home on Jan. 12, 2007 after losing a courageous battle with cancer. She was 59.

She is survived by her beloved husband, H. Neil Reichard, and extended family and friends including her brothers; Christopher F. Kuhn of Bexbach, Germany; Spencer Mc. Kuhn of Cape May, N.J. and Meredith F. Kuhn of Glenwood, Fla. She graduated with a BA from Finch College (New York) in 1969. She was a member and Director of Marshbanks Golden Retriever Club and active with Golden Retriever Rescue. Her dogs, Breeze, Spirit and Tartan are lost without her as is her cat Bistle.

A Memorial Gathering will be scheduled at a later date and interment will be at the family's convenience at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorial Donations may be made in Leslie's name to The Zeke Cancer Research Fund c/o The Golden Retriever Foundation, P.O. Box 3462, Omaha, NE 68013 or Arbor Hospice, 2366 Oak Valley Drive, Ann Arbor, MI 48103. Arrangements by Hosmer-Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Dexter.

Theodore (Ted) James Klapperich of Belhaven, N.C. and formerly of Dexter, passed away at his home unexpectedly Jan. 11, 2007. He was 57.

He was born Aug. 9, 1949 in Conde, S.D. to James and Dorothy Klapperich. After graduating from Dexter High School he joined the US Marine Corp in 1968 serving until 1972. He attained the rank of Sergeant and received two Purple Hearts while serving with the 1st Battaltion/9th Marines in Vietnam. He returned to his true love and married Mary L. Salow in 1970 in Dexter and she survives.

Mr. Klapperich was employed by Sweepster-Jenkins for many years before moving to coastal North Carolina in 1998 and buying a marina. The marina was Heaven on Earth for Ted and he was at his happiest walking on the dock sporting his huge grin and wonderful laugh to greet his guests and friends. He was fortunate to meet many interesting people along the waterway these last years and was a great friend to many that passed through the marina. Those who crossed his path will miss his grin, sense of humor and the friendly hospitality he provided. Mr. Klapperich was a loving father and was a kind and caring husband who shared the ultimate love story with his wife throughout the years. His laugh and smile were contagious to everyone around him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Dorothy Klapperich, a son, Bryan A. Klapperich, and brother Dale Klapperich. Along with his wife he is survived by two loving children Aaron A. Klapperich of North Carolina and Brandi N. Klapperich of Chelsea. Also surviving are his beloved sister Veronica Klapperich of Dexter, brother Paul Klapperich of Pinckney and several other siblings and many loved nieces and nephews. He will also be greatly missed by members of the Salow family; Kathy Loy, Lori (Don) Cubberly, Dan (Tina) Salow, and Dori (Butch) Gross and their families to which he was a great brother-in-law, uncle and friend; as well as many others in the Dexter area who kept him in their heart through the years. He will also leave many close friends in North Carolina who became like a second family throughout these last years. Cremation has taken place and he will remain at his beloved marina.

David D. Rank, 64, passed away Jan. 15, 2007 at Chelsea Community Hospital.
