Power Outage

By Sandi Kasha, Staff Writer

PUBLISHED: January 18, 2007

Some Webster Township residents have been in the dark since Monday following ice storms that caused the power outage.

But Webster Township wasn't alone.

DTE Energy spokeswoman Lorie Kessler reported Tuesday that about 7,000 homes in Washtenaw County were without power. There were parts of Scio and Dexter townships that lost power, but the township offices were open.

But it was a different situation for Webster since their township hall was closed Monday, Tuesday and part of Wednesday due to the power outage.

Ice on trees caused branches to fall on power lines, said Kessler.

"The outage has been defined by those trees," she said.

And with the temperatures persisting in the mid-20s this week, the ice may subsist.

Despite the area's power outage, Washtenaw County Sheriff's Substation in Dexter Village Deputy Keith Dalton said that they haven't received any complaints.

"There aren't any reports on breaking and entering," he said Tuesday. "We're getting alarms, but they're false alarms and that's because of power surges in some areas."

Kessler said that homes that lost their power on Monday could expect power on Wednesday.

"But there were additional homes that lost power on Tuesday and we're expecting them to have their power up by Thursday," she said.

Some residents relied on their generators while others sought shelter elsewhere.

Front Desk Manager Heather Sayer of Chelsea's Comfort Inn & Conference Center said that they were completely booked on Monday and Tuesday.

General Manager Brenda Ward of Chelsea's Holiday Inn Express said business has been good since the power outages.

"We've been booked for two nights straight," she said Tuesday. "And once somebody gets power and goes home, we have somebody waiting and the room is immediately booked."
