Dexter defeats Toledo St. Francis

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team hosted Ann Arbor Pioneer and Toledo St. Francis last Thursday, beating St. Francis 122-64, and losing to Pioneer, 131-55. The Dreadnaughts also traveled to Adrian last Friday and defeated the Maples, 112-74.

Although Dexter, St Francis, and Pioneer swam together, the meet was scored as dual competition between each pair of schools.
Joey Sayre and Ben Steavenson each won two individual events against St. Francis. Taylor Verna was the lone overall winner for Dexter, finishing first against both opponents in the 100 breaststroke.
In the opening race, the 200 medley relay, the Dexter team of Stephen Sobczak, Robert Spiegel, Verna and Sayre placed first against St. Francis and second against Pioneer. The Dexter foursome finished in a state qualifying time of 1:45.92. Danny Rion, Shawn Greco, Liam Donevan, and Walker McHugh placed third versus Toledo.
In the 200 freestyle, Scott Dyer, Jacob Wiltse, and Karl Kumbier finished first, third, and fourth, respectively, against the Knights. Dyer was fifth against the Pioneers.
Steavenson and Matt Cambridge went one-two in the 200 individual medley versus St. Francis, while finishing third and fifth against Pioneer.
In the 50 freestyle sprint, Sayre won against St. Francis and was third versus Pioneer. Sobczak and McHugh were fourth and fifth, respectively, against both opponents.
Scott Crompton was victorious in one-meter diving versus the Knights, tallying a score of 178.75 points, which earned second place against Pioneer. Corey Presley finished fourth against Toledo.
Against St. Francis, Spiegel finished first in the 100 butterfly, while Rion picked up fourth. The two Dexter flyers were third and fifth in competition with Pioneer.
Sayre's second individual win came in the 100 freestyle against Toledo, in a time of 51.24, less than a second off the state cut. The Dexter sprinter was third against the Pioneers. Verna and McHugh finished third and fourth, respectively, against Toledo, and fourth and fifth against Pioneer.
Steavenson notched his second victory in the 500 freestyle versus the Knights, earning third against Pioneer. Dyer was second against Toledo and fifth versus Pioneer. Kumbier placed fifth against the Knights.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Sayre, McHugh, Spiegel, and Dyer combined for first against Toledo and second versus Pioneer. Tim Pituch, Cambridge, Kumbier, and Steavenson teamed up for third place against the Knights.
Sobczak was the victor in the 100 backstroke versus Toledo and placed second against Pioneer. Rion and Kevin Butler placed third and fourth in competition with the Knights, while Rion finished fifth versus Pioneer.
Verna's overall victory in the 100 breaststroke led a sweep of the top three places for Dexter against St. Francis. Cambridge captured second place and Austin Daugherty grabbed third. Against Pioneer, Cambridge finished fourth.
In the 400 freestyle relay, Dyer, Spiegel, Sobczak, and Verna joined forces to finish first against Toledo and third against Pioneer. Kumbier, Pituch, Steavenson, and Wiltse placed third versus the Knights.
Against the Maples, the Dreadnaughts won every event, but Adrian placed enough swimmers in second through fifth to keep the meet competitive. Steavenson was once again a double winner for Dexter.
Spiegel, Greco, Sayre, and Kumbier kicked-off the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Jesse Claflin, Brandon Verna, Pituch and Rion earned third place.
Taylor Verna was the victor in the 200 freestyle, with Cambridge capturing third and Sean Kilian fifth.
In the 200 individual medley, Sobczak was the winner, while Butler picked up third place.
Dyer sprinted to first in the 50 freestyle. Rion finished third and Wiltse fifth.
Crompton won the one-meter diving competition, while Presley placed fifth for the Dreads.
In the 100 butterfly, Steavenson was the winner, with Brandon Verna picking up fourth place.
Spiegel notched a win for Dexter in the 100 freestyle, followed by Rion in third and Claflin in fifth.
Sayre cruised to victory in the 500 freestyle, while Pituch and Cambridge captured second and fourth place, respectively.
The Dexter squadron of Verna, McHugh, Sobczak, and Kumbier sprinted to first place in the 200 freestyle relay.
Steavenson recorded his second win in the 100 backstroke, followed by Dyer in third place and Jake Aliapoulios in fifth.
A strong surge by Wiltse in the last 10 yards of the 100 breaststroke earned him the win, while Pituch grabbed fourth place for Dexter.
The foursome of McHugh, Dyer, Cambridge, and Kumbier combined for first in the 400 freestyle relay. Ryan Aliapoulios, Brandon Verna, Greco, and Butler touched third.
The Dreadnaughts next host Division 1 state powerhouses Ann Arbor Huron and Birmingham Brother Rice Friday at 6:30, in the first of six consecutive home meets.
On Tuesday, Dexter hosts Livonia Stevenson at 6:30 p.m.
On Jan. 25, the Dreadnaughts host Ypsilanti Lincoln at 6:30 p.m.
