State-ranked icers drop first game

Dexter hockey lost to visiting Downriver traditional power Allen Park Cabrini 5-4 last Saturday. The loss was the state Division III No. 9-ranked Dreadnaughts' (9-1, 3-0 Southeastern Conference) first defeat of the season.

"It was our first game after a long lay off and it showed," said Dexter coach Gary Howell. "We didn't bring our A game. But give Cabrini credit, they played well."
The Monarchs opened the scoring at 6:03 of the first period as Gary Astalos turned the light on giving Cabrini a 1-0 early lead. Recording an assist on the play for the Monarchs was Tim Zielinski and Steve Fisher.
With one second left in the first period, Dexter tied the score at 1-1 with a goal from Nick Field. Justin Jack and Hunter Lyons assisted on the goal for the Dreadnaughts.
In the second period, Gary Astalos scored his second goal of the night, off an assist from Kyle Astalos and Andy Femmineo.
A few minutes later, Zielinski scored giving Cabrini a 3-1 advantage. Gary Astalos picked up an assist on the play for the Monarchs.
At the 3:20 mark of the second period, Field notched his second goal of the game, scoring off an assist from Alex Johnston and Jack, closing the gap to 3-2.
To begin the third period, Johnston scored a power play goal at 14:16 tying the contest at 3-3. Zach Lucas and Lyons recorded an assist for the Dreads.
Three minutes later, Johnston scored again, vaulting Dexter ahead 4-3. Field and Lyons assisted on the play for the Dreadnaughts.
With 6:47 left, Gary Astalos scored his third goal for a hat trick tying the contest at 4-4. Kyle Astalos and Brian Obrycki recorded an assist on the goal for Cabrini.
With 1:24 remaining in the contest, Gary Astalos scored his fourth goal of the night for the game-winner. Femmineo assisted on the play for the Monarchs.
Dexter out-shot Cabrini 44-28 for the game.
Goaltender Tony Ceccolini was in net for the Dreadnaughts.
"That was a good effort," Howell said. "They (Notre Dame) were the best team we've played all season. They're one of the better teams in the state."
After a scoreless first period, Mike Machnik scored a power play goal for the Dreadnaughts at the 8:46 mark of the second stanza. Field and Johnston picked up an assist for Dexter.
In the third period, Steve Wyklige scored on a 5-on-3 power play for the Fighting Irish. Tom Sardelli and Doug Orzo assisted on the goal for Notre Dame.
Eighteen seconds later, Kevin Michelcavage scored a power play goal off an assist from Brandon Johnson, giving the Irish a 2-1 lead.
At 7:33, Field scored tying the game 2-2. Austin Shapiro recorded an assist on the play for Dexter.
With 3:20 remaining in the contest, Jack scored the game-winner off an assist from Alex Erber and Shapiro.
Goaltender Nick Ceccolini earned the victory in net for the Dreadnaughts.
Dexter next travels to Woodhaven for a game Thursday at 7 p.m.
On Saturday, the Dreadnaughts host Temperance Bedford 7 p.m. at Veterans Arena.
On Wednesday, Dexter hosts Walled Lake Central at 7:30 p.m.
