Hot shooting sparks Dexter boys

Dexter's boys' basketball team defeated Southeastern Conference foe Adrian 45-42 Jan. 3.

The host Dreadnaughts (6-1) fell behind 10-5 after one quarter. At halftime, Dexter continued trailing 16-11.
In the second half, the Dreadnaughts played much better.
In the third quarter, Dexter outscored the Maples 18-13 tying the contest at 29-29 heading into the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Dreads netted 16 points, while holding Adrian to 13 points for the night's final margin.
"We struggled against their zone defense in the first half," said Dexter coach Randy Swoverland. "We did not shoot well. In the second half, we played more aggressive."
Leading Dexter was senior guard T.J. Fenske and senior center David Pisano who each scored 11 points. Pisano (6-foot-5) also hauled down six rebounds.
Junior forward Dan Newell (6-4) added eight points and seven boards for the Dreadnaughts.
Over the holiday break, Dexter traveled north to participate in a tournament in Kalkaska.
In their first game, the Dreadnaughts defeated Houghton Lake 63-38.
Dexter led 18-12 after one quarter. At the break, the Dreadnaughts increased their lead to 34-23.
In the third quarter, Dexter outscored the Bobcats 14-5 taking a 48-28 advantage into the fourth frame.
In the fourth quarter, the Dreads outscored Houghton Lake 15-10 for the game's final outcome.
Pisano paced Dexter with 14 points and three rebounds.
Sophomore guard Stefan Elslager chipped in 13 points, while Fenske had eight points and five assists.
Junior Ed Zukowski (6-4) finished with seven points and four rebounds, while Newell had seven points and eight boards. Junior guard Ryan Lemasters had five assists for the Dreadnaughts.
In Game 2 of the tournament, Dexter beat Mio 69-59.
The Dreadnaughts raced out to an 18-7 first quarter lead. At halftime, the Thunderbolts rallied closing Dexter's lead to 34-27.
After both clubs scored 17 points in the third quarter, the Dreads entered the fourth frame up 51-44.
In the fourth quarter, Dexter put the game away, outscoring Mio 18-15 for the final tally.
Fenske led the Dreadnaughts with 25 points, including five three-pointers. His five triples tied a season high. Fenske also added five rebounds and five assists.
Pisano ended up with 15 points and five boards, while Lemasters had nine assists.
Fenske and Pisano were selected to the all-tournament team. Fenske was named the tournament's MVP.
David Zeps led the Thunderbolts with 28 points.
"He was extremely hard to guard," Swoverland said of Zeps, a 6-0 guard. "He could dribble drive and shoot the three. He is a skilled player. He kept them in the game."
Swoverland said Dexter executed its offensive sets well.
"We also ran the break pretty well," he said. "We shot the ball well, too."
The Dreads finished 64 percent shooting-wise from the floor.
On Dec. 21, host Dexter topped Tecumseh 54-40.
At halftime, the Dreadnaughts led 25-19.
Entering the fourth quarter, Dexter continued leading 34-28. In the fourth frame, the Dreads secured their victory outscoring the Indians 20-12 for the win.
Pisano led Dexter with 16 points and five rebounds. Fenske had 14 points and four assists, while Lemasters had eight assists.
The Dreads next host Saline Friday at 7 p.m.
On Tuesday, Dexter hosts county rival Chelsea at 7 p.m.
On Jan. 25, the Dreadnaughts visit Ypsilanti Lincoln for a contest at 7 p.m.
JV Basketball
Dexter's JV boys' basketball team participated in the Kalkaska Tournament Dec. 28 through 29.
The Dreadnaughts finished 2-0 for the tournament, defeating Houghton Lake 41-31 and the host Blazers 69-33.
Against Houghton Lake, Dexter ran out to an 8-4 first quarter lead. At halftime, the Dreadnaughts (3-3) opened up a 26-15 advantage.
In the third quarter, Dexter continued leading 32-21. In the fourth frame, the Dreadnaughts scored nine points, while the Bobcats netted 10 points for the night's final margin.
Leading Dexter was Mike Kedroske with 13 points.
Matt Muchmore added seven points, while Dylan Kipke had six points for the Dreadnaughts.
Versus Kalkaska, Dexter raced out to a commanding 24-5 first quarter lead.
At halftime, the Dreadnaughts opened up a 41-9 advantage.
In the third quarter, Dexter outscored the Blazers 16-13, entering the fourth frame up 57-22.
In the fourth quarter, the Dreadnaughts outscored Kalkaska 12-11 for the game's ending tally.
Dexter was strong from the outside against the Blazers, nailing eight three-pointers.
Muchmore paced the Dreads with 13 points.
Nick Gonet added 12 points, while Kevin Yarows had eight points and Thomas Monson seven points for Dexter.
"Our defensive intensity contributed to our offense," said Dexter coach Tim Cain. "Our scoring off of our defense added another element to our game."
The Dreadnaughts next host Saline Friday at 5:30 p.m.
On Tuesday, Dexter hosts Chelsea at 5:30 p.m.
Freshman Basketball
Dexter's freshman boys' basketball team defeated visiting Adrian 45-36 Jan. 3.
The Dreadnaughts (2-3) trailed 22-19 at halftime.
Heading into the fourth quarter, Dexter battled back to take a 30-28 advantage.
In the fourth frame, the Dreadnaughts outscored the Maples 15-8 for the ending margin.
Brian Bentz led Dexter with 16 points. Dan Kedroske and Travis Chaffee each added eight points for the Dreads.
"We started slow in the first half, but in the second half we played much better," said Dexter coach Jason Miller.
On Dec. 19, Dexter defeated Tecumseh 43-33.
At the break, the Dreadnaughts led 19-15.
Entering the fourth quarter, the Indians had closed the gap to 28-27. In the fourth, Dexter outscored Tecumseh 15-6 for the ending outcome.
Kedroske led the Dreads with 12 points. Bentz netted 10 points, while Tyler Dunham had eight points and Alex Wallace seven points for Dexter.
"We played four solid quarters of basketball," Miller said. "We eliminated turnovers."
