In the last two years, behind Forrester, also Dexter's girls' coach, the Dreadnaught boys' team has won a state championship and finished as state runner-up. The girls' squad has reached the state semifinals two consecutive seasons before bowing out.
During Forrester's tenure at Dexter, the Dreadnaught boys' team has won three Southeastern Conference White Division titles, three district championships and two regional crowns.
Over the last two years, Dexter's Forrester-led boys' teams have gone a combined 43-6-2.
For two straight seasons, Forrester has been named Michigan's Division II Coach of the Year.
"This award means a lot because there are so many other coaches, teachers and administrators out there that don't get this type of recognition," Forrester said. "Because I have had great support from my players, their parents and the school district, they alone have provided the opportunity for this honor."
Forrester said what keeps him going as a coach is the opportunity to teach youngsters.
"I just try to prepare my student-athletes for the adversities that may occur on and off the field," he said. "Most of the time they succeed. When they don't, I try to change it into a learning opportunity."
Forrester said the key to his success is quite simple.
"The secret is to prepare players and place them into roles on the team that will help the team succeed," he said.
Forrester said coaching both the girls' and boys' teams is a challenge.
"It's like the changes that occur after dealing with each year's graduating class," he said. "Players change, and you adjust your team to the personalities that you have and put them in positions to which they may help the team succeed. Each team is different. I use each student-athletes abilities to try to accomplish the team's goals."
Forrester said another secret to his success has been the involvement of Dexter parents.
"Plus, the players putting forth their efforts to play for each other and focus on playing for the team and not themselves to reach the team's goals is an aspect in every successful team's character," he said. "Over the years, special families stand out. The Jebsons, Christians and Glahns have afforded me the ability to focus on coaching."
