Dexter competes at invitational

PUBLISHED: January 10, 2008

Dexter's boys' swimming and diving team competed last Saturday in the Spartan Invitational at Battle Creek Lakeview, finishing eighth. In only its second season, the invitational has become a highly competitive meet, drawing top-ranked teams from across the state. The meet provides the Dreadnaughts an opportunity to compete with teams they do not face in dual meet competition, including several from the west side of Michigan.

Host Battle Creek Lakeview finished first with 487 points, followed by Holland (381.5 points), Birmingham Seaholm (363 points), Birmingham Groves (292 points), Saline (232.5 points), Portage Central (160 points), Alma (146.5 points), Dexter (144 points), Holland Christian (87 points), and Flint Powers Catholic (31.5 points). Points were scored in each event for first through 16th place.

The meet comes at the tail end of two weeks of intensive training for Dexter. Despite feeling the effects of the heavy workload, the Dreads were able to turn in some strong performances.

The Dexter 200 medley relay team of Stephen Sobczak, Taylor Verna, Robert Spiegel, and Joey Sayre placed seventh in a state qualifying time of 1:45.58. Kevin Butler, Shawn Greco, Danny Rion, and Matt Cambridge combined for 13th place in 1:53.94.

In the 200 freestyle, Scott Dyer finished 19th, followed by Tim Pituch (26th), Karl Kumbier (28th), and Jacob Wiltse (29th).

Ben Steavenson place 10th in the 200 individual medley at 2:09.59. Spiegel finished 17th.

Sayre led the Dexter sprinters in the 50 freestyle, placing 10th in 23.48. Also scoring for the Dreadnaughts were Walker McHugh in 23.66 (14th place) and Sobczak in 23.72 (15th place).

Scott Crompton placed eighth in one-meter diving, scoring 289.40 points for 11 dives.

In the 100 butterfly, Spiegel placed 14th with a time of 59.17. Rion finished 26th, Liam Donevan 29th and Jesse Claflin 32nd.

In the 100 freestyle, Sayre placed eighth in 51.47, while Verna finished 18th.

Dexter distance swimmers Steavenson and Dyer finished 17th and 19th, respectively, in the 500 freestyle.

Sayre, McHugh, Spiegel, and Dyer teamed up for eighth place in the 200 freestyle relay, with a time of 1:35.82. The foursome of Jeff Pituch, Brandon Verna, Evan Luoma, and Liam Ellmann finished 19th.

Sobczak clocked a Division 1 state qualifying time of 56.08 to place second in the 100 backstroke. Butler and Ryan Aliapoulios finished 19th and 21st, respectively.

In the 100 breaststroke, Verna placed 11th in 1:07.39 and Cambridge placed 16th in 1:10.38. Sean Kilian finished 22nd and Austin Daugherty finished 24th.

Two Dexter relay teams placed in the 400 freestyle relay. Dyer, Steavenson, Sobczak, and Verna combined for a time of 3:33.92 to place 10th. Wiltse, McHugh, Kumbier, and Pituch joined forces to place 13th in 3:37.80.

The Dreadnaughts will continue to face formidable competition in upcoming meets. Thursday, Dexter hosts perennial powerhouses Ann Arbor Pioneer and Toledo St. Francis at 6 p.m.

On Friday, the Dreadnaughts travel to Adrian for a dual meet at 6:30 p.m.

On Jan. 18, Dexter hosts two more powerhouse teams in Ann Arbor Huron and Birmingham Brother Rice, at 6:30 p.m.
