Birding By Ear, 7:30 a.m.

Bird species have a number of vocalizations that are used for different purposes. These vocalizations help us identify who is singing. Join us as we explore bird songs for beginners.

June 15

Fishing with Dad, 1-3 p.m.

We will supply the rods and reels, tackle and bait; you can also bring your own. Meet us at the Rapids View area and try your cast at fishing.

June 21

Michigan Tree Hike, 1 p.m.

On this leisurely paced hike we will identify trees of Hudson Mills Metropark. We will explore how to identify them by their leaves, bark, and shape. There is a fee of $2 per person.

ROCKHOUND BASICS: 2 p.m. Sunday, June 22. Discover what you can learn about ancient Michigan from looking at a rock. Geologist Larry Bean will show you how to "read" the story told by rocks and help you to identify specimens at a local quarry. We will meet at the Discovery Center before driving to the quarry to do some collecting.

Lima Township Board of Trustees will hold a public hearing 7 p.m. and the Planning Commission will hold a public hearing 7:30 p.m. at the Lima Township Hall, 11452 Jackson Road.

Faith in Action will have a career adviser available every Tuesday from 12:30 to 4 p.m. at 603 S. Main Street in Chelsea, to help with resume writing, job searching, career research and talent evaluation. This service is open to anyone who could use help with employment issues. A Michigan Works! computer with up-to-date listings and many other job search aids is available as part of the service. For more information, call 475-3305.

"Glaciers and Western Washtenaw" walk will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at Park Lyndon North, 18801 N. Territorial Rd., in Lyndon Township. Participants will learn about mile-high ice and learn to walk on prehistoric kames, kettles and snake-like eskers - get the wetlands to quake and shake. The walk is all on dry trails. Monday, May 26

- Memorial Day Parade

The annual parade is hosted by the Dexter American Legion Post 557 and this year’s festivities starts at 10 a.m.

 

Monday, June 1

- Dexter-Ann Arbor Run

The MedSport 10K is great for serious runners and not-so-serious runners (and walkers) who want a little more than a 5K but not the whole half. The course features some of the most beautiful stretches of Huron River Drive.

The event is now staged in downtown Ann Arbor, near the intersection of Ann Street and Main Street. That’s also where the event finishes, so 10K runners no longer need to catch the bus!

The race will start promptly at 8:10 am.

 

Saturday, June 7

- Ice Cream Social

You know that spring is officially here when the Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce’s Ice Cream Social hits Monument Park. This year’s event will be from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm. This event is a great favorite with Dexter families. As in past years, the park will be filled with games the kids can play, ice cream, pizza and soda pop, face painting, clowns, petting farm, pony rides, wagon rides through downtown, and craft booths.

 

Wednesday, June 13 and 27, July 11 and 25, and Aug. 15

- Summer Series Join other Chamber members, their families and guests for our spring gathering. In the past we have had a fish fry and pig roast. This year we will meet on the grounds of Gordon Hall. Details TBA.

 

Friday, July 25

- Golf Outing

The 16th Annual Dexter Area Chamber of Commerce Golf Outing promises to be the best golf outing yet with magnificent Hole-in-One prizes. Team or individual golf spots ($100 per golfer) are still available as well as the opportunity for your business to become a Golf Hole Sponsor ($100), Beverage Cart Sponsor ($200 - limit 2), or a Golf Cart Sponsor ($500 - limit 2). Donated prizes are welcome for door prizes and raffle prizes ($100 or greater value).

 

Friday & Saturday, Aug. 8 & 9

- Dexter Daze An annual event that draws visitors from all over the area, Dexter Daze includes numerous craft booths, two days of entertainment for kids and adults, children’s rides and tons of food! Dexter Daze would not be complete without a fully packed Entertainment Schedule, and this year is no exception. Dexter Daze offers entertainment for the whole family. The entertainment schedule for 2008 has not yet been established.

 

Saturday, Oct. 4

- Apple Daze

Fall naturally brings many people to Dexter to enjoy the Huron River and Metro Parks as well as our hundred year old cider mill.  Monument Park is the focal point for this event where you can buy apples, caramel apples, and apple cider, enter an apple pie eating contest, take a hayride or browse the craft booths.  Craft Booths open at 10:00 am, Games and Activities 11:00 am - 5:00 pm

 

Friday & Saturday, Dec. 12 & 13

- Victorian Christmas Deck the halls with gifts from our Victorian Christmas Festival.  Friday evening will be a Christmas tree lighting and community sing in Monument Park. Saturday will feature the Fred Schmid Memorial Holiday Parade at 10:30 am down Main Street then Santa will be in the park to hear the little ones’ special requests. Crafters, carolers, and musicians as well as hot cocoa and cookies will be available. Relax and enjoy Christmas shopping, craft demonstrations and carolers in the Victorian tradition in our decorated downtown.  Hours: 11:00 am - 4:00 pm. Sunday will feature events as well.

Mornings, Mochas and Melodies

When: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturdays

Where: Pierce’s Pastries Plus

What: Local musicians perform each Saturday morning. 

 

Chelsea Farmer’s Market

When: The market will open on May 3 and runs on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon. Ends in October.

Sounds & Sights on Thursday Nights

When: Thursdays (June 19 through Aug. 28)

Where: Downtown Chelsea

What: Musicians, street performers and food vendors perform and local merchants stay open late. A festive atmosphere provides a wonderful experience for shoppers and visitors. Sounds and Sights takes place every Thursday throughout the summer.

 

Chelsea Painters Art Show

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., June 7-8

Where: Chelsea Community Hospital

What: The 35th annual event will highlight work by Chelsea High School students. Sharon Dressen McKnight will perform live music.

SummerFest!

When: July 25-26

Where: Chelsea

What: Chelsea SummerFest is an annual summer festival that began over three decades ago. What started as a summertime sidewalk sale has burgeoned into a highlight of summer that draws visitors from all over the state and beyond. The two-day event features fine art and crafts displays, merchant sales, vendor booths, live music, children’s crafts and activities, a classic car show and more. This year’s SummerFest offers many new, exciting changes as well as keeping the tradition of old favorites that keep people coming year after year.
